Hello,
My double-hung window bottom sash drops down and does not stay up. The balance assembly are broken.

The parts needed look similar to this post:
https://www.swisco.com/discussions/New-window-coil-balances-for-Certainteed-window-77-257431

The plastic cover says: Certain Teed.
The two coils say: 407 U.
And the bottom sash weighs about 15 lbs.

Please provide a price quote for replacement of a complete set of parts, for both left and right sides.

Thanks,
Gregory

Hello,

Thanks for posting! Your coil balance assembly appears to be an older discontinued shoe that is no longer available. The good news is that we have two possible replacements that may work for you.

For this, we typically recommend our 15-192 Certainteed pivot shoe to replace your Simonton brand part but you may need to shave down the aligners from the shoe to install it into the window. Take a look at the dimensions to confirm if it may work for you.

These are compatible with the Series 170 coil balances as well as the Series 171. The S171 is stacked on top of the S170 in situations where there is more than one coil. To confirm which coil strength you need, you'll need to look for any stamps/markings on the metal coil. If there are no stamps/markings, you'll need to get the window weight and divide it by the total number of coils in the window. The compatible cover is part 15-156 and the balance drum part 15-157.

The second option is a new assembly that we are also now recommending; the 15-259 pivot shoe. This should fit well in the track, along with the Series 159 coils springs and either the 15-255 single support or the 15-256 double support. To use this assembly, the original pivot bars would need to be replaced with our 26-083. We are still in the early stages of confirming if this replacement is a good long-term solution but we have high hopes that it will work with little need for modifications, if any. Take a look and if you decide to give it a try, we'd be eager to hear how it works out for you.

Be sure to carefully review all of the information to confirm which of these assemblies might be the best solution for your window.

Hello Jasmine,

I tried the parts you recommended.
They installed and seem to be working fine, except for the
15-255: 3/4" Coil Single Support.
The coil support sticks out of the channel and interferes with the two
tilt latches on top of the bottom sash, when the sash is lowered fully.
However, the tilt latches still work.

Also, on the plastic coil support, does it come with a screw or am I to reuse the old screw? What is the screw part number?

Thanks!
Gregory

To install the balance system with the cover, it has to be installed under the tilt latches, while they're at their lowest point. This is the position they would be in when the window is closed.

Your old screw shoe be sufficient for installing these using the single installation hole on the cover.

Take a look at the video included above for an idea on how to install these.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
