I cannot seem to find the piece of metal that stops the window from opening more

Thanks for reaching out to us. I'm not too sure what you may be showing here. I wonder if it could be something like the 39-398 sash stop device. Take a look at the specifications and see if they match up with your old hardware. 

This part is usually designed for casement windows, not awning windows. The video below will go over how it installs.
